TLDR I started using Fedora Linux as a work-only OS in 212 so I could use CUDA without a Visual Studio license. I started to prefer the user experience to that of Windows and have been using Fedora as my primary OS since early 213. The transition was a bit rocky at first but having learned from the experience and with distributions getting more user friendly to setup installing a new distribution today is a breeze. KDE Plasma gave me the familiar Windows feel which did help a good bit in not feelingpletely lost. The Long Answer My journey to Linux began in the fall of 212. At the time I was a graduate student working on my PhD inputational astrophysics. Some of the code I had written for my research was horrendously slow. It was going to take days to run once and I was likely to have to run it many times. I started to poke around the internet a bit about how I might be able to speed things up. I had already used OpenMP to parallelize the offending for loop when I first learned about GPGPUputing. I was using my personal custom built desktopputer for this research which at the time had two Geforce 98GT cards in SLI. Looking at my options between CUDA and OpenCL CUDA seemed much more straightforward to use and I already had the NVidia cards anyway. Then I found out that in order topile CUDA code on Windows I needed a Visual Studio license but on Linux you could just use the freely available GNU Compiler Collection. Being a graduate student with limited financial resources the choice was clear. I downloaded Fedora 17 Scientific as I had briefly been introduced to Fedora a few years prior but hadn used it for much. I installed it over Windows 7 as the plan was to simply use my desktop for work and my Windows 7 laptop for basically everything else. Now it did take me some time to transition. The Windows way was very ingrained in me. I didn know what a package manager was. I didn know what a repository was. As far as I knew you went to websites downloaded drivers or programs you needed and installed them from an executable. Getting the proprietary drivers installed to use CUDA took a few days because of my naivety. Getting CUDA working took another couple of days. But eventually I did get it working. So everyday I would go into work do some coding on my desktop or setup some program to run for a while then use my laptop for all my otherputing needs like email writing documents looking up journal articles etc. Then the end of the day woulde and I need to shut down my laptop to go home. Many times this would involve waiting for twenty minutes while Windows installed updates. The next day my laptop would take about twenty minutes to boot up as Windows continued to install updates. I was getting pretty tired of it all. Meanwhile on my desktop I just had to click a button when I was notified that updates were available. When I went to shut down theputer there was no waiting. When I booted up the next time no waiting. I started to use my desktop more and more while leaving my laptop in my bag to save from being caught off guard with updates. The more I used Fedora the more I liked it. After about 6 months I setup my laptop to dual boot. Today I only use Windows to play native Windows games. I use Linux for everything else. Over time Ive gotten much savvier in the ways of Linux and Linux itself has improved greatly. I can now much more easily get my proprietary drivers installed. Getting CUDA up and running isn difficult at all. Printers are a breeze to setup. When my wife and I got a new printer last year it was easier to setup on Linux than Windows 1. Ive had Linux on 3 different desktops and 2 different laptops now. Ive never made special considerations when selecting hardware and the only difficulty Ive had was with a cheap Netgear USB wireless dongle and with the back light on my old HP laptop not turning back on after resuming. Both of those things are no longer problems. Overall I wouldn say that my experience with the transition was smooth but that was more likely due to my lack of research ahead of time. I had builtputers for years and installed many different Windows versions so I was a bit over confident going in. Had I taken a few days read up on things a bit more it probably would have gone much better. Now many distributions make things a breeze. Ive been considering switching to Manjaro for the ease of setting up proprietary drivers out of the boxbined with it being a rolling-release distribution meaning I shouldn have to worry about upgraded my OS at least once a year. Even with the rocky start I still found Linux to be a better user experience and was convinced to switch simply by using it when I had intended to only use it as a work OS. I just think that if there is a proprietary solution that works better for a task or even just for a specific person performing that task they should also have the freedom to choose to use that proprietary solution.
